A Week with the Nuggets

What a thrill to spend a week with the current NBA champions, the Denver Nuggets.

After spending multiple UFC fight camps with NBA superstar Jamal Murray, I was invited to join the team’s performance staff for a week. The goal was to collaborate and talk shop about all thing’s physiotherapy. As a classic sports nerd at heart, this was the perfect trip to merge my passion for elite sports with a chance to observe, learn, and teach some super friendly, open, and receptive colleagues from the northern hemisphere.

The conversations with Director of High Performance, Steven Short, were long, colourful, and in-depth, covering everything related to sports physiotherapy and culture. From treatment philosophy to the specifics of manual therapy techniques and athlete preferences, it was amazing to offer my insights and experiences over 20+ years to a team of allied health professionals who were the most welcoming crew I’ve ever met. It’s not every day you find yourself holding court and running in-services only 10 meters from the actual NBA trophy!

Meeting new folks from all parts of the organisation and spending time with players and managers was a real career highlight. It made me pause and reflect on my original reason for getting into physiotherapy—to work in basketball in the USA! I guess the first gig might as well be with the best!
